Boeing 737 Whistleblower to Testify

Joshua Dean to Tell Congress of Production Failures

Just months after an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 and a Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX both crashed minutes after takeoff—killing a total of 346 people—Joshua Dean, a Boeing whistleblower who warned of manufacturing defects, will testify before Congress on May 9, 2024. Dean, 45, a former quality auditor at Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems, alleges that managers failed to act on his reports of improperly manufactured parts.

Dean’s testimony is the latest in a series of events that have raised questions about the safety of Boeing’s 737 Max planes. In the wake of the crashes, Boeing has been accused of rushing the plane to market and ignoring safety concerns. The company has also been criticized for its handling of the crisis, including its initial reluctance to ground the planes.

Dean’s testimony is expected to shed light on the manufacturing problems that may have contributed to the crashes. He is also likely to discuss Boeing’s response to his warnings, and the company’s overall safety culture.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. ET in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill. It will be webcast live on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s website.
