First half of the season
First debacle
After the second place in the 1979/80 season, 1. FC Kaiserslautern started the 1980/81 season with three wins from six games. After further defeats, the Red Devils slipped into the relegation zone in mid-September. However, they were able to work their way up the table again and ended the first half of the season in a good ninth place.
Ebner goes, Baltes comes
After a 2-1 defeat away to Werder Bremen, coach Karl-Heinz Feldkamp was surprisingly dismissed on September 29, 1980. His successor was his assistant coach Norbert Baltes, who had already coached the team in the 1979/80 season. Under Baltes, Kaiserslautern remained unbeaten for four games.
Second half of the season
In free fall
After the winter break, 1. FC Kaiserslautern initially did well and was still in ninth place after 21 matchdays. After a 5-0 defeat at home to Eintracht Frankfurt, the team's performance collapsed. They only managed to get two more wins in the second half of the season, and they slipped back into the relegation zone. After a 1-0 defeat at home to VfB Stuttgart on April 25, 1981, 1. FC Kaiserslautern was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga in 15th place.
