Mike Johnson Elected 56th Speaker of the US House of Representatives

Republicans End 22-Day Leadership Vacuum

Louisiana Representative Mike Johnson Secures Broad Support

On October 25, the full House of Representatives voted 220-209 to elect Mike Johnson as the 56th Speaker of the House. Johnson, a Republican member of Congress, received the support of every Republican and several Democrats. The election ended a 22-day leadership vacuum after former Speaker Nancy Pelosi stepped down.

Johnson, who represents Louisiana's Fourth District, has served in the House since 2017. He is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Small Business Committee. Johnson is known for his conservative views and his strong support for President Donald Trump.

In his acceptance speech, Johnson pledged to "unite this House and work together to solve the challenges facing our nation." He outlined his priorities for the 118th Congress, including tax cuts, healthcare reform, and border security. Johnson also promised to hold the Biden administration accountable.

Johnson's election as Speaker is a significant victory for Republicans. It gives them control of the House and allows them to set the legislative agenda for the next two years. Johnson is expected to work closely with President Trump to advance the Republican agenda.
